When Life Hands You... Pineapples

I figured lemons were too negative here - life is good, so good! It's just a little crazy right now. Crazy like pineapples (because pineapples are so craaaazy). I'm not sure if anything I have written lately has seemed vague, but there have been a lot of changes happening behind the scenes in my life and I wanted to share them on the blog at the right time!

First of all, I had a baby. Duh. That is obviously a huge life change. I posted about the first few weeks and the first 3 months already, so I won't go into that a ton. In summary - a HUGE change in the BEST kind of way.

Then, there is the whole "work thing." Pretty quickly after Piglet was born, I knew I did not want to go back to work full-time. Just thinking about it stressed me out and made me sad, so I knew that it was definitely not for me. Ideally, I wanted to work two days a week - I love working in the university environment and have had such a great experience so I knew it was something I still wanted to do. In my current job, I knew that a part-time position wouldn't work, mostly because it's a tiny office and they need someone full-time. So, even though it was so so hard, I gave my resignation mid-way through my maternity leave.

Just a few weeks ago, a job became available in a different department on campus - one that I was familiar with and had worked with in the past. And it was part-time! It almost seemed too good to be true, honestly. I applied and... I got it! I started a week after I interviewed so it has definitely been a fast life-change. I have only been in the position for a few weeks, but I already love it. It's suuuuuch a great fit for me. And being away from Piglet twice a week is completely fine. My mom is actually watching him while I'm at work, which is AMAZING. I don't worry at all and they have the best time together. It's seriously such an ideal situation. God truly answered my prayers in a way I didn't know was possible.

Next, the house. Eric started a new job in January in OKC, which means that he has been spending a significant amount of time commuting. Because of traffic, it takes him about 45min both ways to get to work. He really loves his job, but the constant driving in crazy traffic has been annoying. Combine that with the fact that our house is starting to feel cramped (2 beds, 1 bath, huge dog) - we decided to move. We actually sold our house in February, kind of by accident. Short story: we listed on the "make me move" option on Zillow and it had a full price offer the next day. Suuuuuch a huge blessing since cleaning and showing the house over and over with a newborn sounded pretty miserable.

We thought we would find our next house relatively quickly and we had over two months before closing so we weren't worried. BUT it ended up being a pretty intense ordeal. The market is good... so good that the houses we wanted to see would go off the market after one day of listing them (which is what happened to us... we should have known). Anyway, after looking at over 30 houses with our INCREDIBLE realtor (if you're local, I would be happy to recommend her) we finally found one. We put in an offer 2 days after it went on the market and even though it had multiple other offers, we got it!

We are so stinking excited about the new house. Since our house was small, there will be so many things that are new to us that might seem normal to other people - two bathrooms! a garage! a separate bathtub! We can't wait. We are moving in a couple of weeks and I haven't done much packing at all but I'm relatively un-stressed about it.

I'm sure blogging will fall on the back burner for a little while once we move (which made me just now think about the fact that we need to get internet set-up at the new house...). But I'm around! And I am so excited to share the house with you soon!

  8. Yay for the new house and new job. Things just seem to fall into place. They definitely did for us this spring with a new house. We went from 3 br 1 bath no basement and detached garage to 4 br 2 bath and 2 levels and an attached garage. You're going to love your new space!

  9. Wow! Who knew that you had so much going on? Are you still keeping your part time job, or will you now be commuting long hauls? Just wondering, since I have not had to deal with commuting - although my husband has to do it - 30+ min. I don't want to move just so his commute cuts down and mine increases - especially since we won't be here much longer (I suspect).

  14. This is a great update! New babies and jobs and houses are so exciting! I looooove looking at houses (even though we bought ours two years ago, I still cruise real estate websites), so I'm going to be super pumped to see pictures of your new one - living vicariously through bloggers is kiiiind of my thing.

Also, I love that picture of Piglet in the bath. He looks so much older than he did in the last one you posted!

  16. Oh wow! I'm so glad you shared about this. Congrats on the new job situation AND the new house ( a new closet tutorial? Someday? Maybe??) I'm so glad things have worked out for you guys. I really hope one day I can switch to a part-time/stay-at-home-mom role, but I know it just doesn't work out for everyone. Hoping that things go very smoothly for your move!

  17. What exciting news to share! Congratulations on the new job, selling your house so quickly and finding a larger one you love! We're in the process of moving too so I wish you the best of luck with that! We just started boxing up knick-knacks, movies and books, things we wouldn't need for the next few weeks first so we didn't have to pack everything at once. That sure seemed to help the stress levels!

  19. Wowza, sounds like quite the few months! So happy that you've found a new position that's working out so well for you personally and for your family. And a new house! How exciting. Congrats on selling yours so fast too... I can tell you that having all kinds of showings with a toddler around is NOT fun. At least your piglet wouldn't have been able to mess up the toys 5 minutes before the showing every time :) Can't wait to hear more about your new place - living vicariously until I get to move into mine in 2 months, ha.

Well, he's gorgeous, and that is so great that you managed to sell your home so easily, and find a new, perfect job. Seems like everything is just falling into place!

  23. Wow everything is going crazy for you - crazy good of course! :) What a wonderful year for you! :)

I'm feeling happy you're confident about moving house with a new(ish) baby as we are thinking this year is the year that we move, I'm a little apprehensive about trying to keep everything organised with a baby to contend with as well.

Huge congratulations to you on all of your awesome news! Completely understandable that your blog might fall to the sidelines!

  24. Wow, so many changes going on for you, Ashley! A new job, a new baby, and a new house?! Craaazy indeed! I'm really happy to hear you're happy with everything that's going on :) What division is your new job in? And I'm eager to hear more about your new house, and see pictures if you care to share eventually :) Kevin and I are in the process of buying our first house, and we're so happy to have found the house we can see ourselves living in for a long time. The market up in Minnesota is crazy right now as well, and we lost two houses (even one where we offered significantly more than the asking price!) before finding "the one." I'm really glad that all we have left is closing...and then we have our own house!! :)
