Welcome, 2014.

How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?
~ Dr. Seuss

Seuss speaks the truth. This year flew by in what felt like two months. Here I am, looking in 2014, trying to remember what even happened in 2013. I thought it might be depressing helpful to look back on what I did and did not accomplish last year and set some new goals for myself.

Last year's goals were well-intended, unfortunately I didn't accomplish many of them.

1. Take it deeper and closer with Christ I mean, I wouldn't say this was a complete flop, but I definitely want to improve my relationship with him even more.
2.  Become a morning person This was a definite flop. Even though Eric and I are both champion sleepers, I continue make this a goal every year. I just think I would accomplish so much more if I got up earlier.
3. Learn Spanish This one I did not even try, but I don't feel bad about it. Eric ended up starting school last year and I taught 3 classes in addition to my regular job. We decided to wait until 2014.
4.  Exercise 3x a week Eh... some weeks we did, some weeks we didn't.
5. Do a 30-day cleanse I actually did this. Is was meant to improve my skin and it did. I will do a post about this soon.
6.  Read 6 spiritual development books I think I read two :(
7.  Journal more I think I need to get more specific with this one.

Even though I didn't accomplish nearly as much as I hoped to, I'm setting new goals for myself this year. I decided to get a little more specific and break them down into categories.

Health (Physical & Mental)
1. Read the Bible 3x a week. This is obviously a similar goal to #1 above, but I want to get more specific. My hope is that by reading the Bible more often, my relationship with Christ will become more meaningful and more personal.
2. Exercise 3x a week. Same dang goal from last year (and the year before... and the year before...) but this year I am taking Eric out of the equation. Before, I would only run in the morning if we were running together. Our schedules are going to be really different this year, so it will be on me whether I get out of bed and go for a run or not.
3. Journal 3x a week. Man, oh man, 3x a week is turning into the magic number.

Skills
1. Complete Spanish Rosetta Stone. I have this sitting in my closet and this is the year I will complete it!
2. Take a Photoshop and/or photography class. For the most part, I am self-taught in these two areas, so I obviously have a lot to learn.

Relationships
1. Write one letter a month to a friend. Now that a lot of my friends are married, sometimes I feel like female friendships go the back burner. I HATE that. I want to be a better friend, and I figured since a lot of my close friends live in different cities, this might be a good start.
2. Do more activities with Eric. We are kind of "all or nothing" type of people. We either hang out at home and watch movies, or take big trips together. While I really enjoy both of those things, I want to do more "in between" activities together. Like going to local festivals, camping, taking a cooking class, etc.

Blog
1. Do more guest posts. Shameless plug: if anyone wants me to do a guest post - let me know!
2. Create a blog calendar. My blog posts are a bit sporadic and not very planned. I'm hoping an  editorial calendar might help with that.
3. Share more personal thoughts. I want this blog to be about everything that I am interested in, not just style. I want to share more snippets of my life with you.

What about you? Do you set New Year's resolutions? What are your plans for this year?

  1. I think it's good that you've broken down your goals based on what you learned from last year's. These seem attainable, I especially like the letter writing goal.

  3. Seems like you have some great goals! I am still mulling over what (if any) goals I want to set this year. Also, I'd be happy to have you guest post sometime at my blog (even though it's super tiny) or we could swap sometime. Let me know! Happy 2014!

  6. these are such great goals, so many i could see myeslf incorporating into my own life. i love that you have broken them down into categories. i've always been curious about how rosetta stone works even though i don't have a need to learn another language at this time, so if you dive into that it would be so interesting to hear about your experience with it. i'm trying to be more intentional about keeping in touch with some close girlfriends too... there almost feels like too much pressure to respond to lengthy emails, so i'd love to just send sweet notes and maybe a little gift once in a while to let them know i'm thinking of them. oops, this is really long -- thanks for letting me figure out my own goals for 2014 while responding to your post, haha!

  7. Linking up through Weekly Wishes :) Good luck with all your goals, I to am a very sporadic blogger! Though couple of months back I brought myself a magnetic white board which is a weekly planner as well. This way I can see when I have time to blog :)

  8. woah there, your blog is awesome too Ashley, when you commented it led me over here and I was surprised to find someone who wants almost EVERYTHING that I want for myself this year. It's good that you've put a realistic number on things for the upcoming year - I've found it really helps rather than just saying 'do this more' The only difference is learning spanish , but in place of that I want to ace all my classes this year.

I'm definitely open to guest blogging on your site or you could guest blog on mine if you want.. anyways hit me back up if you're interested.

    Following back!

  9. I'll be excited to hear about the cleanse! I'm always on the hunt for things to improve my uber dry sensitive skin! And I'd love for you to do a guest post over on my blog...any ideas? My ideas are always on the fly!

  10. These are so great, Ashley and it's awesome that you don't give up even if you don't entirely succeed in previous years. I love all of these, but I had to chuckle at the "become a morning person" one. If you find that secret, let me know! Loved getting to see you today. Oh, and you can totally guest post on my blog anytime. I don't have a large readership, but I'm sure they would enjoy it!

  13. I love number one. Keep us updated! New follower.

  14. I definitely think the key to making resolutions or goals is keeping them specific. I always make ones that are so lofty and nebulous that I never really know where to start. You've got some great ones on here, especially those blogging ones!

  15. I love all of these goals. I can totally relate to growing with Christ, exercising, being an intentional friend, a better blogger, and a morning person (I think I tried this for about 3 days last year...ha!) Happy 2014!

  18. Good luck with your goals! I'll definitely be back to look for the post about your 30 Day Cleanse. I need to start reading the Bible more often, too. My goal is to read straight through in 2014.

  20. This is such a great "goals" post! One of mine is to get deeper in the Word also... so far so good!! I've done a cleanse too (twice actually) and am feeling like my body needs it again soon! Would love to hear how yours went. :)

  21. I really like how your goals are much more measurable this year. I think it will definitely help you accomplish them!

  23. Great collection of goals, Ashley! I can certainly relate to your relationship with Eric - my husband and I are completely the same way! We spend so much of our time together either dinking around at home, or going on vacation (which, admittedly, we've only done like twice, ha!). I LOVE your idea of writing letters to your friends, too! I'm a huge fan of snail mail, and this reminds me that I should write to some of my girlfriends who live out of state :)

Thanks so much for your comment! I reply to my comments via email, but I can't do that if you are a no-reply blogger (if you don't know what that means, you probably are). Check out this tutorial to fix it!
