Here is the before. I decided that empty space above the mailbox needed something. The options were limited because the wall is siding and I couldn't make any holes in it. I entertained the idea of hanging some sort of tapestry from the ceiling, but ultimately decided that it would be difficult to get it to stay in place. I also looked at a few peel-and-stick decals, but the ridges in the siding limited how big the decal could be. Lastly, I decided I wanted something um, free. Because that's how I roll. So this is triangle banner that I came up with:
Want to make a no-sew triangle banner yourself? Here's what I did:
Step 2: Trace your stencil onto the wrong side of the fabric then cut it out.
Step 3: Repeat step 2 over and over again until your hand hurts and you begin to hate geometry once again.
Step 5: Glue the backs of the triangles onto ribbon using a hot glue gun. I actually used twine as my "ribbon" because it was on hand, and I like the way it looks.
A few notes:
* I realize this might not the be the "best" method for making a banner, but I think it works really well if the banner will only be seen from one side and you don't own a sewing machine.
* The pinking shears keep the fabric from fraying. They are pretty much the key to this method. You can get them for about $20 on Amazon.
* This is a great project for fabric scraps, which is what I used (making it free!).
*You might also notice that we hung some string lights - more on that later!
The edges of your final banner don't look like they were done with pinking shears. Do I need glasses or do you fold it over? Such a great porch decoration!
ReplyDeleteAw thanks, Kelli :) Yep, the edges are done with pinking shears! I think it must be really subtle... but up close they look good - the zigzag edges are kinda cute!
DeleteI'm so glad that I'm following you! I love how your banners turned out. They look great. Thank you so much for sharing your awesome work:)
