I recently opened an email from a friend that said "I think job searching has to be the worst thing in the world." And I completely agree. I have been doing it on and off for about a year now and I haven't had much fun doing it. Here's why:
1. I keep getting the vibe that you have to "know someone who knows someone." Unfortunately for me, most of the people I know well are between the ages of 21-25 and are employed by a grad school, God (missionaries... I know a lot) or by a plant nursery.
2. I am not an overly sweaty person, but good grief! I can seriously sweat buckets during interviews.
Interviewer: "what are your weaknesses?"
Me: "Um" (wipe sweaty forehead) "I think that I um sometimes forget to put on enough deodorant"
3. The rejection emails. I can handle the sincere ones, but the "dear applicant, although your credentials were indeed impressive, we cannot offer..." Um excuse me, but I have a name and I definitely made no claim that my credentials were impressive. I'm 23 years old and I haven't even had a real job...
4. I usually have to pee about every thirty minutes so if an interview lasts 45 minutes or more... well, I have to make sure and keep my legs crossed tightly.

ReplyDeleteAgree. And I'd add to that:
ReplyDelete5. Instead of asking me if I can type 80+ words per minute, how about I just sit on the computer and show it to you? If you don't like it, I won't be offended, at least I had a chance to show you what I can do.
